III - The Memory Quilt of Lacey Mulhearn A new business woman in Marienstadt brings Gretchen an antique quilt found in the attic of the house she is turning into a B&B. With the help of Miss Martha they uncover a story from the past when one of the town's first Irish immigrants decided to take a wife.

The Bucktail Cap in the Trunk Volume 1 More Secrets of Marienstadt eBook Kathleen Valentine Reviews
I enjoyed Vol. 1 very much. It's a feel good story, about people in a small town in PA. I wish Vols. 2 and 3 were available through the Library but they're not. Since this book is under 200 pages, it's a fast read but an enjoyable one. I've read other books by this author and I enjoy her writing style very much.
THE BUCKTAIL CAP IN THE TRUNK is a three-volume anthology of short stories that expand Kathleen Valentine’s colorful literary tapestry of life in the small Pennsylvania Dutch community of Marienstadt. My favorite of the four tales is THE MEMORY QUILT OF LACEY MULHEARN which, in melting pot America, could be the history of anyone’s immigrant family, from whatever nation. Although I am not of Irish descent, the circumstances of the characters felt very similar to what I know of my own family’s history.
Paddy Mulhearn came to the New World with a hat full of dreams and found his place in the booming little town of Marienstadt. What was missing was a bride to share in Paddy’s good fortune. Within a few years of the end of the Civil War, by dint of shrewdness and hard work, Paddy had risen to the status of a prominent businessman, but still, the established families of German descent wanted no part of an Irish son-in-law. Lonely amidst his accomplishments, Paddy sent money to his “Mam” in Ireland and looked forward to news of home.
One day a letter arrived from his mother. “A terrible disgrace has befallen the McGinnis family, she said, such a dreadful, dreadful thing. I am almost ashamed to tell you this. Their daughter Lacey was always such a sweet, pretty girl—and a good Catholic we thought and now she’s gone and gotten herself in the family way—and she just fifteen.”
Paddy read the words then read them again. Drawing paper and pen from his desk drawer he wrote as quickly as his hand would let him. “Send Lacey to me”, he wrote. “I’ll take care of her”. He folded enough money into the envelope to cover passage, sealed the envelope, and putting on his hat, he walked to the post office to mail it right away.
And so Lacey, all alone, hardly more than a child herself, and carrying an infant in her womb, crossed the great Atlantic to a new and unknown world. Thus began a marriage born of desperation and isolation that blossomed into a truly American love story. Years later, an old quilt discovered hidden away in the attic of the house Paddy built for his young bride, tells a tale not even Paddy knew.
— A tale of tenderness and pride that just might bring a happy tear to the reader's eye.
The first two stories in this volume, TREEING and THE KISSING TREE are charming and funny love stories based in local tradition. The fourth story, CONTINENTAL DIVIDES, is more of a meditation on how a special place effects our lives. All are written in the same perceptively nostalgic style that transports the reader back to another place and time.
I love reading Kathleen's books - it's like visiting with old friends. The characters and settings are warm and familiar.
Another wonderful read by Kathleen Valentine. A continuation of her heartwarming Marienstadt stories. All of her characters are believable and down to earth. Her writing is accurate and meticulous. I love the fact that every story contains humor and yet so heart warming. I highly recommend this book.
